Motley Crue = Marketing Genius?

My husband is a HUGE Motley Crue fan. Huge. He’s read their biography over and over, buys all their albums, and was even late coming to eat dinner last night so he could watch on the Web the live press conference where the band announced their upcoming tour and new album.

But I was fascinated when he told me that Motley Crue is going to release their first single off their new album through Nintendo’s Wii “Rock Band” game. For those who don’t know, here’s the overview from VNU.net: Rock Band is already available on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 2 and 3. The game challenges players to put together a band and tour for fame and fortune while learning to master lead/bass guitar, drums and vocals. The game is coming to the Nintendo Wii this summer.

WHA??? GENIUS! Here’s a band, that by my husband’s account, has been written off time and again as washed up, and yet they use their marketing prowess (or rather, their marketing TEAM’S marketing prowess) to tap into a whole new generation of potential fans through the insanely popular Wii (I, myself, am a Wii bowling champion). In order to hear the song, you have to master the various levels of the game.

Hey, Nikki Sixx may have been pronounced dead and come back to life back in the 80s, but the guy’s no dummy when it comes to marketing his band. Love it.

  1. It is a new way to market to kids that have no idea who they are. Great job

  2. The never ending reunion tour, of all things 80s, just won’t stop. In an attempt to get press for a forth coming album, tour, and movie Motley Crue (a band specializeing in greatest hits packages since 1991) is releasing their new single “The Saints Of Los Angeles “ exclusively as a playable song on Rock Band- a video game that features drums, guitars and singing- proving ” you can teach an old dog new tricks”- just don’t tell him he is too old to use lip stick and hair spray.

  3. Brian – I know! Fantastic. And Myles – looked like their press machine is working. Their fan base continues to grow.
